Small Fish App

by Kiyoshi Furukawa, Masaki Fujihata, Wolfgang Münch

In 2011, I was offered to work on the restoration of the Media Art Installation „Small Fish“ at the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media. The original application dates back to 1999 when Kiyoshi Furukawa, Masaki Fujihata and Wolfgang Münch created 15 interactive visual musical scores under the subtitle „Chamber Music with Images for Computer and Player“. By arranging visual elements within each score the audible composition changes. The restauration for mobile devices was first released in April 2011.

In 1999, »Small Fish« has been created at ZKM in the course of the series »digital_arts_edition«. It is a cooperation between the Institute for ZKM | Music and Acoustics and the ZKM | Institute for Visual Media and is since 2011 also available for iPhone / iPod Touch and iPad. The elements which can be used to change the score and thus influence the music, are widespread abstract forms, circles, points, lines, or moving colored patterns. In the 15 different graphic scores, the player can arrange the multiple parts to affect the music immediately.
